What is alternative medicine?

“Alternative medicine” or “complementary medicine” is a form of medicine that does not use the drugs or chemical substances found in conventional medicine to treat patients.

Alternative or complementary medicine covers a broad spectrum of therapies, each with its own specific approach.

The most common forms of alternative medicine

The most common forms of alternative medicine include

  • homeopathy
  • osteopathy
  • acupuncture
  • naturopathy
Reimbursement by basic health insurance

Basic health insurance only covers five forms of alternative medicine: acupuncture, homeopathy, anthroposophic medicine, herbal medicine and Chinese medicine.

Essential condition: these treatments must be dispensed by a doctor whose training in the field is recognised by the Swiss Medical Federation (FMH). Therefore, compulsory insurance providers will not accept invoices for alternative medicine practised by therapists.

Supplemental insurance solutions to extend your coverage

If you wish to extend your coverage to include other forms of alternative medicine and therapists, you will need to take out supplemental insurance.

Groupe Mutuel Assurances SA offers several supplemental insurance solutions that recognise a broad variety of alternative medicine therapies. These policies generally offer various levels of coverage. The purpose of the treatments must be medical. Treatments relating to prevention, comfort or well-being are not covered.
