Your insurance with Groupe Mutuel

Within the partnership between your employer ETH Zürich and Groupe Mutuel, you may benefit from exclusive advantages.

Healthcare in Switzerland

It is not always easy to find one's way in a foreign healthcare system.

How does the compulsory health insurance work?
Health insurance in Switzerland is regulated by the Swiss Federal Health Insurance Law of 1994 (LAMal/KVG). It is compulsory for all persons residing in Switzerland (within three months of taking up residence or being born in the country). The operational activity related to the compulsory insurance was delegated to private companies by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). These companies are not allowed to make a profit off basic insurance. Health insurance covers the costs of medical treatment and hospital stays.

Academic Care

To make this task easier, Groupe Mutuel Assurances GMA SA has developed Academic Care, a special insurance coverage for students and interns from abroad who are training or studying in Switzerland.

Academic Care provides full coverage, on a level equivalent to compulsory health insurance benefits (LAMal/KVG), in case of illness, accident and maternity; it also offers emergency medical assistance available 24/7 (repatriation to Switzerland and transport costs). Academic Care can be taken out by students from abroad for the whole duration of their training and up to the age of 40.

  • Coverage of illness, accident and maternity benefits, comparable to those under the compulsory health insurance under the Federal Law on Health Insurance (LAMal/KVG).
  • A choice of three deductibles for compulsory health insurance: CHF 0, CHF 100 or CHF 500.
  • Legal protection in the event of a medical error and a lump-sum amount in case of death.
  • Admission possible up to the age of 40.
